Exciting bird related sports
Man's early interest in birds were probably just for food but over the centuries we became more and more aware of the bird's ability to find its way back home. The interest in birds today is great, man studies all types of species together with their nature and their colours. Bird watching as well as bird hunting has become a very popular past time and sport.
Pigeon racing is very popular. The sport of pigeon racing grew rapidly over the past few years. With the arrival of railways a new use was found for the instinctive talent of this bird. As the railways streamlined, pigeon racing took the roads and has continued to grow to its present 80 000 enthusiasts who raise around 2 000 000 young birds each year.
The huntable pheasant thrives in weedy fence rows, ditch banks and bushy woods. They use these locations for a safe haven if they need to escape when a predator arises. The use of pointing dogs and flushing dogs are very successful strategies for pheasant hunting. Pheasant hunting is quite tricky as they are very clever and will often outsmart some of the most experienced hunters on a regular basis. They have well developed legs and can run just as fast as the hunting dogs when they are being chased. If a pheasant is wounded every effort should be made to get to it as soon as possible, because even an injured bird can run long distances in a short period and run to a cover we you might not be able to find it.
One of the most challenging types of bird hunting is dove hunting. A dove lives mainly on seeds from cultivated fields and weeds along fence rows. They usually do not feed in areas containing heavy, densely-matted vegetation. They prefer bare ground where seeds are plentiful. If you are hunting in the afternoon it can be advantageous to hunt near some water, because they usually feed in the morning and afternoon and are notorious for heading to the nearest watering hole for a drink.
Quail hunting is yet another exciting sport available to all outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you are hunting with some dogs or driving down ranch roads on a customized 4 x 4 the thrill of quail hunting is enough to excite any hunting enthusiast.
