We live on a small lake in Michigan. Every year (except oneyear two years ago) we have one pair of mute swans living on the lake. They appear around April and have cygnets in mid-May. This year they started with 8 cygnets and at this time in August have 5 left. Recently they ostracized one of the remaining 5. This is very upsetting to me. Will this cygnet survive? Should I call the DNR to pick it up? Should I feed it? Please tell me why this happens and how I should handle it.

I love swans,. I am going to write a book about them. They are the most elegant of birds.
