Greyhooded Kingfisher (Halcyon Leucocephala)

Greyhooded Kingfisher (Halcyon leucocephala)

Photograph Description

The Greyhooded Kingfisher is found from south of the Sahara to the Limpopo province of South Africa.

Perches for a long time on a branch while it searches for prey. When it spots prey it bobs its head and dives to the ground to catch its prey.

The Greyhooded Kingfisher feeds on insects and small lizards, which it beats on a branch to kill.

Habitat is woodland near a source of water.

The Greyhooded Kingfisher nests in a burrow dug in the top of an Aardvark burrow or the side of the bank of a stream.

Very nice shot, good pose and colors, interesting the behaviour of this Kingfisher which feeds on small lizards and beats it on a branch to kill them as usually do for a fish.

Ciao

Ernesto.

Cool bird, cool shot!
Africa is the only continent I'm missing and may visit by the end of this year...
SA was among my plans, but turn out very expensive... I'll probably visit Kenya and Tanzania.
Cheers!
