Birds and goods that are made of birds makes up a big chunk of the world's economy. Goods such as chicken meat, ostrich meat, turkey, feathers, eggs, masks, leather, dusters, stage costumes, fly fishing bait, boas, eggshells, hats, and many other popular consumer goods are made out of our feathered friends.
There is a growing consumer interest in poultry products, and many small scale producers have established successful enterprises. These producers take full advantage of federal exemptions that, in many states, permit farmers to sell 1000 broilers per year directly to consumers with inspection. These operations are usually seasonal, closing down in winter months. Producers make about $2.00 to $3.00 profit per bird and sometimes make a small supplementary amount.
Statistics have shown that the average adult eats about 30kg of poultry a year, but poultry sales have dropped with about 30 – 40 % in some places of the world this year due to the fear of the deadly bird flu viruses.
Only four kinds of poultry have been found widely profitable for market purposes; namely, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. The only other two kinds that occasionally come to market from the farm are pigeons and guinea fowls, but these in such relatively small numbers that they can scarcely be compared with the first four.
