The Northern Illinois Parrot Society (NIPS) is all set to host its 6th annual seminar. This year’s seminar is titled “Flying into Knowledge” and will be held at the Centre at North Park, which is situated in Franklin Park, Illinois. The all-day seminar will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2008, and the proceeds of the event will be used to benefit bird research and conservation efforts.

The NIPS seminar will be incredibly good for bird owners and breeders since it is these individuals who have been specifically targeted with the choice of material that will be dispensed at the seminar. They will be provided with tons of information that will help them to expand their knowledge on both wild parrots and pet birds. Topics will range from more simple things, such as understanding the behavior of pet birds, to much broader subjects, such as the conservation of parrots. This year’s presenters include bird behavior consultant Sally Blanchard, assistant director of conservation and field research at the National Aviary Steven C. Latta Ph. D., African bird species breeder Jean Pattison and Peter S. Sakas DMV from the Niles Animal Hospital and Bird Medical Center. No doubt the information dispensed by these knowledgeable people will prove to be indispensable and fascinating to those in the audience.

However the NIPS seminar is not just about lectures. It is also a great opportunity to meet other bird-loving friends from all over the country. Vendors will be on hand to sell bird toys, cages and lots of delicious food. A raffle will also be a part of the day’s events, the proceeds of which will be used to benefit avian conservation and research. If this sounds like your idea of a great day out, make sure that you get your ticket soon to avoid disappointment. NIPS is the only club in the area that currently hosts an annual education seminar of this standard, so you can be sure that there will be a big response. The tickets will cost $80 per a person and the price will include lunch. If that seems a little steep to you then remember that not only are you being provided with some amazing insight and research and a great meal, but the proceeds are always used to benefit a number of avian conservation and research projects. Some of the proceeds will also be used to help rescue organizations. All these beneficiaries will be selected after the conference. So make sure that you’re a part of the 6th annual NIPS avian seminar!

A recent study conducted by researchers from the Illinois Natural History Survey and the University of Illinois has resulted in statistical data to prove that during their nocturnal migration birds fly together in loose flocks. This is the first conclusive data that confirms what many ornithologists and bird-watchers have suspected for some time.

Researchers have spent decades attempting to unlock the mysteries of the nocturnal migration of birds. Considering the size of a bird and the altitude at which it flies, together with the fact that it is nighttime, this has proven to be very difficult. Previous studies have indicated that, although migrating birds may have been flying tens of meters apart, they nonetheless stayed together by flying at the same speed and at approximately the same altitude. However, these studies have not provided convincing proof to support this assertion. Even if a study could establish that the birds were in fact traveling together, there was no way of knowing if this flight pattern was intentional.

The new research project, which has been conducted by professor of animal biology, Ronald Larkin together with Robert Szafoni, analyzed bird-flight data which had been collected by Larkin by means of a low-power-density tracking radar during the 70s and 80s. This radar works by pointing a narrow cone, referred to as a “pencil-beam”, at any target within range. The target, in this case a bird, appears as an echo on the radar screen. With a flip of a switch, the radar locks on the target and tracks it while recording data with regard to the target’s distance from the radar, as well as its altitude and direction of flight. Moreover, the radar provides data which can be used to calculate the frequency of the target bird’s wing beats.

Once the radar has locked onto a bird and is tracking its flight, if another bird appeared in the radar’s beam, the radar operator could switch back and forth between the two birds and thereby track the flight details of both birds simultaneously. Upon analyzing dozens of sets of data, researchers came to the conclusion that a significant number of tracked birds were flying at the same speed, same altitude and in the same direction, even though some of the pairs were more than 200 meters apart.

Ongoing research continues to reveal that birds are fascinating creatures with astounding abilities – and no doubt bird-lovers everywhere agree.

TASC’s Midwest Bird Expo is set to take place on 5 April 2008 in the main hall of the DuPage County Fairgrounds, Wheaton, Illinois. The Avicultural Society of Chicagoland (TASC) is an association made up of individuals who have been brought together by their common goal of providing a better life for birds in both their domestic and natural environments. TASC’s Midwest Bird Expo takes great strides toward that goal by making available every conceivable bird-related product, information, advice and more for bird-lovers to enjoy.

In addition to the many vendors that will be updating bird owners on the very latest products on the market, there will be a number of interesting and helpful workshops and talks by respected bird experts. The first workshop for the day will start at 10:00 am and is presented by Linda Morrow, a professional bird trainer and behavioral specialist. The workshop is designed to help owners and their companion birds build a strong relationship that will last a lifetime. Using the non-confrontational positive reinforcement method of clicker training, Linda will assist owners to communicate with their pet birds at the bird’s level of understanding. Not only can negative traits, such as biting, be overcome with this method, but positive reinforcement helps build a relationship which both bird and owner will find exceptionally rewarding.

Dr. Irene Pepperberg, who is noted for her in-depth studies in animal cognition, specializing in parrots, will be giving two lectures during the day. Together with her colleagues, Dr. Pepperberg’s research aims to establish the cognitive and communicative abilities of parrots as intelligent creatures. Their goal is to encourage responsible ownership of parrots, as well as promote conservation of parrots in the wild.

Hoffman’s Wild Animal Show will add an additional element of excitement to the day. Under the watchful eye of animal trainer, Bill Hoffman, and his team, audience participation is encouraged. Lively and entertaining commentary describes animal behavior and traits of a variety of interesting animals that love to interact with people.

Avian vet, Dr. Karen Becker, will be on hand between 10:00 am and 12:00 noon to answer questions relating to avian health. Dr. Becker is qualified to offer advice on conventional veterinary medical care as well as nutritional therapy, homeopathy, eastern and western herbal medicines, nutraceutical therapy and Bach Flower therapy. She is also certified in Reiki, which she uses with great success on hospitalized patients.

Other guests of honor include Dr. Peter Sakas, who has many years experience in avian medicine and is the author of “Essentials of Avian Medicine: A Guide for Practitioners”. Dr Jean Dubach, expert in animal genetics, will answer questions relating to his specialty which includes establishing relatedness and gender determination on birds at zoos and in private collections.

Certainly the schedule for the day is jam packed with activity. The first 200 people to arrive at TASC’s Midwest Bird Expo will receive great prizes, so make sure to get there early and be prepared to stay all day – doors open at 9:30 am.
