The annual Big “O” Birding Festival is scheduled to take place from 25 to 27 January 2008 in Moore Haven, Florida, on the western side of Lake Okeechobee. Long time bird watchers are no doubt already aware that this area is a birder’s paradise and the activities arranged for the three day festival are sure to reinforce their love and respect for these amazing feathered creatures. The Big “O” Festival is also the perfect opportunity for new and potential bird watchers to find out what birding is all about.

The Doyle Conner Building in Moore Haven will be the home base for the diverse activities scheduled. Tours with knowledgeable tour guides start off with the Early Bird Tour and, after a full day’s activities end with the late night “Owl Hoot” tour. Other tours planned are the Wading Birds Tour, Dinner Island Tour, Regional Birds Tour, and visitors can even take the opportunity to bird by canoe on Fisheating Creek.

The key note speaker of the festival will be Dr. Ryan Wheeler and his discussion will focus on how ancient artists found inspiration in Florida’s birds as portrayed in birdlife carvings and ceramics that date back to the first inhabitants of the area. Research has revealed that birds were not only an important source of food to many of Florida’s Indians, but also played an integral role in the cosmology and symbolism of ancient culture. In support of his discussion, Dr. Wheeler will present images of some of the more outstanding Florida artifacts which depict birds. These include carved and decorated bone from a southern Florida archaeological site, wood carvings from Florida center and effigy pottery from Weeden Island, as well as a variety of interesting objects made of precious metals which had been salvaged from Spanish shipwrecks.

A presentation on the Great Florida Birding Trail will be given by Mark Kiser of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The interest in bird-watching is growing rapidly as more and more people realize what a pleasurable activity it is to take time out from the stresses of daily life to enjoy nature. This has resulted in the need to ensure that the birding trail is conserved, while at the same time making prime birding spots available to the public. To this end, more than 440 key bird watching sites have been identified and compiled into comprehensive guides to assist birders in getting the most out of their bird watching experience.

Going slightly off the birding theme, Debbie Misotti of The Talking Monkeys Project will give an interesting and informative discourse on practical things that humans can do to help the primates of the world, while becoming more aware of the impact humans make on the environment.

Other speakers include Robert Fulton, and Dr. Nancy Dale. Jeff Herod will present a fun, but educational, program on native wildlife during the Kids are for the Birds event to be held on the Friday of the festival, with the focus on being vanishing bird species.

Past events have shown that the organizers of the Big “O” Birding Festival put a lot of thought and hard work into making sure that the festival leaves a lasting impression on visitors. The January 2008 festival has every indication that it will be even better than ever before.

The 11th annual festival will be held from 23 to 28 January 2008 and all bird and wildlife enthusiasts are welcome to attend.

Bird-watching is a fascinating activity that can be enjoyed by groups, families and individuals. Requiring minimal equipment, skill or physical fitness, birding is an inexpensive way to get in touch with nature. The 11th Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival hosted by the non-profit organization Brevard Nature Alliance will give birders and potential birders all the information they need to pursue this hobby. In 1997 there were about 200 participants in the event and this has grown to more than 3,000 in 2007 proving how popular birding is becoming. It is anticipated that the 2008 event will be even bigger and better than ever before, with loyal supporters and new participants all enjoying what the festival has to offer.

Exhibitors at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival will include, crafts people, educators and artists, as well as organizations, businesses and government agencies that represent and are involved in nature, wildlife and bird watching. Eco-tourism will be highlighted at the festival with the emphasis on protecting and nurturing earth’s natural resources.

The goal of Hands-On Wildlife Safari is to use “hands-on” education and entertainment to raise awareness of the need to preserve the earth’s diversity. They educate participants with the use of animals, such as the African feral cat, Florida panther and North American bobcat as well as a variety of reptiles, in an interactive learning experience. Demonstrations will take place throughout the festival.

Amongst the other arranged activities that will keep visitors busy all day is a display by the largest traveling collection of winged predators in the world. Families will get the opportunity to make their own bird feeder as a group project. There will be demonstrations of bird banding – an indispensable technique that is used universally for studying the behavior, movement and survival of birds. Barn Owl workshops, which includes the dissection of their pellets to ascertain what is included in their diet, will give new insight into the habits of this fascinating bird.

With so much to offer, the 11th Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Florida, promises to be a treasure trove of useful information and well worth visiting.

If you love birds, live in Florida and would like to make some new friends, why not consider being a part of this year’s Florida Panhandle Birding and Wildflower Festival? This great annual event is the perfect place for bird lovers and amateur botanists to get better acquainted.

Imagine a bird festival that allows you to take your time touring a breathtaking bay preserve until a spectacular sunset lets you know that it is time to finish-up for the night. Of course, there is more to the St Joseph Bay Preserves Center than just birds – the entire area is teeming with plant and animal life which gives the festival an added edge. In fact, any animal lover will feel at home here in amongst this dynamic group of individuals who have gathered together to make the most of this pristine wildlife preservation center. You may be fortunate enough to spot mammals like deer and bats or you might find your tour sponsor dredging up some fascinating marine creatures from the depths of the bay. Of course, there is also a wonderful abundance of plant life on the banks of the preserve where these mammals and birds have chosen to make their homes. All of this makes for the perfect setting for an annual birding and wildflower festival.

So what else can you expect to enjoy at the festival? There are field trips, lectures, barbeques and shrimp boils. Great association with likeminded people and comfortable lodgings provide the ‘cherry on the top’ to the annual festivities. The Annual Florida Panhandle Birding and Wildflower Festival will be held on October 6th during 2007 at the St Joseph Bay Buffer and Aquatic Preserves. Anyone is welcome and you simply need to contact event organizers to guarantee a place for yourself at this great event. So start packing your favorite bird-watching gear, get on the phone and make a booking to ensure that you are part of this year’s Annual Florida Panhandle Birding and Wildflower Festival. It’s the perfect opportunity to make new friends, discover new things about nature and immerse yourself in the wonders of nature.
