With hay being a by-product cultivated by farmers, forming bird shaped stacks with hay, has become an art form in the Chainat Province. It has led to the annual Chainat “Hoon Fang” Straw-Bird Festival, where villagers transform hay into colorful and detailed bird designs, each trying to win top honors at the festival. Massive birds of all shapes, color and specie are displayed on the lawns of the festival, and the best designers compete in different categories such as village handicraft and young talent. The festival is also accompanied by light shows and lively performances. Another nearby attraction, also visited by festival goers, is the large Chainat Bird Park, where a variety of over 200 bird species can be seen.

Every year thousands of serious bird watchers head out to Detroit Lakes in Minnesota to make the most of this fabulous birder’s paradise. The Festival of Birds in Detroit Lakes allows bird watchers the opportunity of getting to see and learn more about the many enchanting bird species that live here.

The reason that the Detroit Lakes area is the perfect location for such a festival is because it part of a vegetation transition zone. Here tall grass prairie meets with coniferous and northern hardwood forests while ample water also helps to lure <strongs>birds to the area. This wonderfully diverse ecosystem provides a suitable habitat for more than 250 species of birds and it is this excellent selection of feathered creatures that lures more and more bird lovers to the Festival of Birds with every passing year.

Last year marked the tenth annual celebration of the Festival of Birds and the event proved to be most memorable, with a record sighting of 190 different species of birds being seen. Special guest David Sibley was also a treat for those in the know. Some of the more unusual sightings were Eared Grebe, Willet, Long-billed Dowitcher and Bonaparte’s Gull. Perhaps the rarest sighting was that of a Red Knot. All in all, the four-day festival was a massive success and it was widely enjoyed by those in attendance.

This year’s festival will take place from 15 to 18 May. The special guest for the year will be author and naturalist Scott Weidensaul. As a Pulitzer Prize finalist, Weidensaul is sure to provide a most enjoyable keynote address on Saturday. The title of his speech will be “Return to Wild America: a Yearlong Search for the Continent’s Natural Soul”. Weidensaul is widely know and well-respected for both his literary works and his love of nature. He will be one of the field trip leaders taking people to the new birding site at Glendalough State Park on Saturday.

Two other aspects of the festival to look forward to are a new birding site at Red Lake WMA/Beltrami Forest and numerous presentations on the changing environment, which will be given in the evening. The field trips to Agassiz, Glendalough and Red Lake are nearly completely booked so you should register soon to ensure that you don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity.

Bird lovers in the Washington area are no doubt already gearing up for the Leavenworth Spring Bird Festival. Set to take place this year between May 16-18, this great annual event gives enthusiasts a chance to really soak up the wonderful bird life in the area.

2008 marks the sixth annual Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest. The festival has been growing steadily as bird watchers stream to the area to make the most of its diverse range of habitats. Here snow-capped mountains give way to sunny pine forests with a range of growth in between. This sort of varied environment provides the perfect habitat for a range of bird species and so bird lovers can expect to see more than just a few bird species during the Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest in Washington. Enthusiasts keep their binoculars keenly trained for signs of calliope hummingbirds, harlequin ducks, white-headed woodpeckers, western tanagers, osprey and macGillivray’s warblers – to mention just a few!

While the main focus of the weekend’s festivities is bird watching, events are not exclusively limited to this facet of nature. Festival goers can also learn more about geology and wildflowers, and gain a new appreciation for the arts. Those who have spent the winter being a little too lazy for their likings can get back into the swing of things by going on leisurely strolls or participating in more active hikes.

The Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest is truly an event for people of all ages and all birding capabilities. Each year there is a specific emphasis on a particular facet of the lives of the birds that live in the area and so people leave knowing a little more about our feathered friends. They also learn more about why it is important that we look out for their welfare. The Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest is ultimately a weekend that is spent focusing on nature and the plight of animals and plants in this fast-changing environment of ours. The ultimate goal of the Bird Fest is to encourage citizens to take a fresh look at natural resources and so be inspired to protect natural habitats. Let us hope that this year’s Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest reaches that commendable goal.

The 12th San Diego Bird Festival, sponsored by the San Diego Audubon Society, is set to take place from 6 February through to 11 February 2008. The venue for this popular birding festival is the superb Marina Village Conference Center in Mission Bay, San Diego, California.

The six-day program for the San Diego Bird Festival includes many of the most popular events of past festivals, as well a several new trips and workshops. There are 48 events scheduled to take place throughout the festival. The “Local Favorites Trip” will take participants to Old Mission Dam and the Santee and Lindo Lakes – birding havens that are surrounded by busy suburbs. Bird watchers can expect to see an astounding variety and number of birds, including downy and Nuttall’s woodpeckers, wood and ring-necked ducks, western blue-bird and osprey, as well as vermillion and gray flycatchers.

The “Birds of the Anza-Borrego Desert” all-day trip starts at 5:30 to arrive at the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park as the sun rises. This rugged desert environment is home to a wide variety of bird species including the great roadrunner, Costa’s hummingbird, cactus wren, phainopepla , black-tailed gnatcatcher and long-eared owl.

“Birds of the Laguna and Cuyamaca Mountains” is a trip into San Diego County’s mountains, which provide diverse environments of expanses of grasslands and chaparral as well as oak and conifer forests. Weather permitting, the group will stop off at a number of places and should be on the look out for ferruginous hawks, mountain chickadees, lark sparrows, Steller’s and western scrub-jays as well as hairy woodpecker.

Other excursions on the program include “San Diego’s Pacific Rocky Shores Trip”, “Whale Watching and Pelagic Birds off San Diego’s Coastline”, “Birding Along the Border”, “San Diego River Estuary Walk”, plus many more.

The dramatic increase of fires in Southern California over the past ten years has raised concerns among conservationists who fear that one of nature’s most diverse areas is heading for an ecological disaster. The unique “Chaparral, Wrentits and Fire Worshop and Trip” plans to give participants an in-depth look at the problems caused by fire and possible solutions to these problems.

Photographer and author, Kenn Kaufman, will be the keynote speaker at the San Diego Bird Festival banquet. As a world authority on birds and the author of a number of birding books and guides as well as being the field editor for Audubon magazine, Kenn Kaufman will be sharing some of his in-depth knowledge on bird-related subjects which includes his commitment to nature conservation.

Without a doubt, the San Diego Bird Festival is packed with opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of birds and their habitats and is an event that no bird lover would want to miss.

The NPRPF Parrot Festival is hosted by the National Parrot Rescue & Preservation Foundation, or NPRPF. Their selfless efforts to rehabilitate rescued parrots and exotic birds has led to many unwanted birds being placed in loving homes and being able to spend the rest of their days surrounded by love, care and much needed attention. The National Parrot Rescue & Preservation Foundation also educates trainers and owners in the care of parrots and how to re-establish trust and eliminate unwanted behavior that stems from emotional instability and neglect.

To bring awareness to the plight of these magnificent birds, the foundation launched the NPRPF Parrot Festival, to educate and reach out to current and future pet bird owners, breeders and trainers. The festival brings leading bird specialists to the festival, who assist the public to address various issues and to lend support where needed. This year, the festival will be presenting speakers such as Dr. Geoff Olsen, who will be speaking on A Comparative Study of Laboratory Test Results Using Duplicate Avian Samples; Dr. Rebecca Fox, on the Harmony for Feathered Set: Why Personality Matters to Parrots Too; and Leslie Moran, on the Body and Spirit Preventative and Alternative Holistic Care. Other speakers such as Dr. Ian Tizard, Jill Bell, Barbara Heidenreich, Dr. Debra McDonald, Dr Susan Friedman, Nancy Speed and Dr. Natalie Antinoff will be looking at various topics including, behavior, nutrition, diseases, hand rearing and health.

Visitors to the festival can also join in on attractions such as a Toy Making Workshop which will be presented by the Leather Elves. A great number of vendors will also have exhibits and stalls available for visitors to browse through and do some shopping. Vendors at the NPRPF Parrot Festival for 2008 will include the Bird Talk Magazine, Bird Toys Etc., Amazona Society, About Birds, NPRPF Psitta Market, Antique Beak, Bernie’s Creations, The Feather Mart, Cavalier Bird Toys, Gulf Coast Exotic Bird Sanctuary, Parrot Chest, Star Bird and Wingtastic.

The festival will be held from the 25th of January to the 27th of January 2008, and will be a event filled with attractions, information and assistance. Assisting the public to become better parrot owners, the NPRPF hopes to improve the relationship between parrot and owner, and reduce the number of feathered friends being abandoned. Prospective owners are able to contact the NPRPF, in regard to adopting a bird, assistance with a lost bird or just for educational purposes. The festival hopes to highlight the joys of owning a parrot and create greater awareness with regard to the care needed when owning one of nature’s most colorful creatures.
