Black Grouse Saved from Extinction
The Black Grouse appears on the IUCN Red List of endangered species and was considered to be one of the bird species most likely to become extinct. However, through the dedicated efforts of conservation groups over the past two decades, the dramatic decline of this rare bird has not only been halted, but turned around, and Black Grouse numbers in the northern Pennines are slowly rising.
The Art of Hand Rearing Baby Birds
For many bird owners, hand rearing a baby bird is a rewarding and very time consuming undertaking. It takes patience, dedication and discipline, but owners will reap the rewards of hand rearing as the baby birds form a close bond and loving relationship with their owners. In breeding programs, birds are often taken from their parents to encourage increased production, or in some instances the chicks are orphaned by their parents and need human assistance to ensure their survival.
Remarkable Re-discovery of Beck’s Petrel
With the last verified sighting of a Beck’s Petrel being almost 80 years ago, conservationists were of the opinion that this particular bird species (Pseudobulweria becki) had become extinct. However, to the delight of ornithological conservationists, the British Ornithologists’ Club recently published photographic confirmation of Beck’s Petrel sightings.
Keeping Waxbills in an Aviary
Waxbills belong to the same family as finches (Estrildidae) and there are sixteen species of these lively and entertaining little birds. Keeping waxbills is not a complicated undertaking. However, they do have specific requirements to maintain optimum health and these should be taken into consideration before deciding to buy one (or preferably two).

TASC’s Midwest Bird Expo is set to take place on 5 April 2008 in the main hall of the DuPage County Fairgrounds, Wheaton, Illinois. The Avicultural Society of Chicagoland (TASC) is an association made up of individuals who have been brought together by their common goal of providing a better life for birds in both their domestic and natural environments. TASC’s Midwest Bird Expo takes great strides toward that goal by making available every conceivable bird-related product, information, advice and more for bird-lovers to enjoy.
