El Dorado Bird Reserve, Colombia
The American Bird Conservancy, Conservation International and Fundación ProAves serve as joint custodians of the El Dorado Bird Reserve situated in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range of northern Colombia. These custodians have successfully halted a holiday home development in the area, which would have proven devastating to the prolific bird life, including 21 endemic species, as well as migratory songbirds from the United States.
Aviornis – Playing An Important Role in Bird Conservation
Aviornis, or Aviornis International, was established in the year 1973 by a group of Belgian aviculturists who shared the same vision in the conservation of waterfowl and ornamental birds. A Dutch branch of Aviornis was founded in 1973, and has spread across the globe, with more than eight thousand members in seven different countries. Aviornis International is a conservation group that not only protects different bird species but also assists members in various aspects of birding.
Exceptional Birding in Cuba
The Republic of Cuba is an archipelago of islands in the Caribbean Sea. Consisting of the main island (named Cuba) surrounded by four main groups of islands, Cuba has about 350 species of birds, including more than 30 endemic species. Add to this the temperate climate and friendly people and it is easy to see why Cuba is a popular birding destination. There are numerous prime birding locations and many tour operators offering birding tours.
Eilat Spring Migration Festival, Israel
Southern Israel is widely considered to be a bird watcher’s paradise, with the city of Eilat and the surrounding areas being among the best birding destinations in the Western Palearctic. The Israel Ornithological Center and the International Birding and Research Center have teamed up to organize the Eilat Spring Migration Festival with the objective of gathering together birders from all around the world to enjoy the wonders of bird migration in southern Israel. The Eilat Spring Migration Festival is set to take place during the peak spring migration period, from the 24th through to the 31st of March 2008 and will be based at the Isrotel Agamin Hotel in the city of Eilat.
Alaska Bird Conference 2008
The 2008 Alaska Bird Conference will be the thirteenth conference since its establishment in 1982, as the conference is held every two years. The very first Alaska Bird Conference was held in Anchorage, and this year the West Fairbanks Hotel and Conference Center, in Fairbanks, will host and accommodate the hundreds of scientists and bird specialists who will be attending. Not only will the conference dazzle those in attendance with new information, but it falls within perfect timing to watch the breathtaking Northern Lights perform their spectacular dance in the skies of Alaska.
