Preparing for Natural Disasters
It’s never easy trying to face the many difficulties that occur when a natural disaster strikes, but a bit of careful planning can really help to ease a lot of the problems that may arise. This is especially the case when you have pet birds that need to be evacuated, since you will have to care for their needs despite the looming crisis.
Brown Pelican Numbers Hit Record High in the Farallones
The Farallon Islands, located in the Gulf of the Farallones off the coast of San Francisco, California, around 32 kilometers south of Point Reyes, are home to a growing number of Brown Pelicans that at one time were facing extinction. Conservationists at the Point Reyes Bird Observatory have noted that the numbers of these fascinating birds have reached a forty-year peak, which is great news for all who have been keeping track of fluctuating Brown Pelican numbers since 1968.
EAD’s Bird Database Given a Boost
The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Emirates Bird Records Committee (EBRC) that will give the agency access to almost a quarter of a million reports of wild bird sightings in the United Arab Emirates. The reports date back to the late 1960s and will no doubt prove to be a massive boost to conservation efforts in the region.
Import-Export Tariff Increase
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently released a proposal that will make the cost of importing and exporting animals and animal products a lot pricier than at present. The proposal will also apply to pet birds, which will undoubtedly affect bird breeders as well as bird owners involved in the import/export trade
Mini Macaws Make Magnificent Pets
Aspiring bird owners often think that a Macaw will make the perfect pet bird. But after a bit of research they find that these larger parrots require a lot of care and effort, mainly due to their size. If that is a concern that you have, you may want to consider a Mini Macaw instead. These beautiful birds are every bit as striking and full of personality as their much larger counterparts – but they’re far easier to care for!
