A Bird Extravaganza: Central California in Winter
Wildlife refuges in central California are exciting places to watch birds, any time of year. But in winter, they’re phenomenal because California as a whole is rich with birdlife. It is one of only three states in the U.S. which is home to more than 500 species of birds (Arizona and Texas are the others). California is also a crucial wintering area for a majority of the Pacific Coast’s ducks, geese and shorebirds.
How Penguins Stay Warm (and cool!)
Penguins live in icy waters. The Emperor Penguin, in particular faces cold weather, living in Antarctica. It faces quite a challenge: how to keep its body temperature at 100-102 degrees Fahrenheit, when the winter air it lives in may be a full 200 degrees colder!
Kiwi Birds
One of the world’s oddest bird species is the kiwi. This New Zealand bird species seems to break all the rules on what it means to be a bird:
