Kauai’s hideouts for Hawaiian Honeycreepers
Bird-watchers in the Hawaiian island of Kauai should visit the Alaka’i Swamp, or nearby Koke’e State Park. This high-elevation rain forest is one of the wettest places on earth- bring a rain coat! – but it is also a good place to look for Hawaii’s incredible honeycreepers.
Identifying Birds By Sound
Birds are very talented vocalists. They recognize each other over long distances and through thick shrubbery, using their voices. With a little practice, humans can also learn to recognize birds by their songs or calls.
Birds and Outdoor Cats
No bird-enthusiast likes it when their cat kills a wild bird. But they may be unaware just how harmful cats can be on bird populations. Many bird species are reduced in number, or have even become endangered, because of outdoor cats. In fact, one study calculated that in the U.S. state of Wisconsin alone, rural cats may be killing up to 219 million songbirds each year. Another study in England followed 964 free-roaming cats for five months. The cats killed 14,000 animals, 3300 of which were wild birds.
Birds: Flamingos
Flamingos are easily-recognized, long-legged water bird species with a characteristic pink color on their feathers. They live in shallow, salty lagoons and lakes, in tropical regions of the world and they have a very unique feeding method. Flamingos filter their food out of water and mud and their odd, down-turned bill is one of the most specialized bills of all birds. It is lined with complicated horny plates, much like the baleen plates in a baleen whale’s mouth.
